Creating a video archive of my career in public relations.

In my role as President & CEO of Burson-Marsteller in Asia-Pacific, I am committed to transparently capturing my activities on video to the greatest extent possible in order to share information about the latest communications trends and to make PR more accessible to next-generation talent entering the profession from school these days.

This video project dates to 2008. Then I was the North Asia President of Edelman, doing a lot of experimenting with video online on the firm’s Japan and Korea websites. I was living in Tokyo and Seoul then, two cities with very big broadband pipelines.

Now, I wasn’t sure how many people would take the time to watch video, but when I posted a few, the traffic statistics were impressive (especially for what are ostensibly B2B websites). But the problem was, only new video was readily available for posting online, yet most of my ‘PR memory’ came from old analogue VHS tape, which is cumbersome to convert into digital format. So I decided to take the time, and now this section of my site also offers digitized versions of PR video from my career going back to 1993.

» Richard Edelman visit to Korea

This is the first of many videos I have with my friend and mentor. This one shows me thanking him for his address to the staff of Edelman Korea (I had recently been appointed the Managing Director), followed by Richard saying some candid and very true things about the dynamic of the agency business. He mentioned my new office's revenue of...

» Personal reflections on modern public relations

Recently I sat down with Jeff Ansell - one of my great PR mentors going back to Hill & Knowlton days in the early 1990s - to discuss modern communications trends and reflect upon some of my experiences over the years in North America and North Asia. I also spoke about the public trust of the communications professional, and the difference...

» Korean national TV news interview re. time management

SBS television in Korea interviewed me a few years ago concerning productivity; in a business where our product is time financed by clients to achieve their communications objectives, PR professionals must optimize the value of their time through continuous education and commitment to excellence.

» Media training for the media trainer; interview rehearsal

Sometimes PR people can act like doctors who make bad patients when it comes to doing their own media interviews. Therefore, I've always been pretty determined to avoid hypocrisy when I advise clients to prepare messages and do a dry-run interview Q&A beforehand by always doing the same myself. This is a very informal rehearsal tape for a...

» American Chamber of Commerce in Korea

Here's some footage (converted from VHS) of an Edelman event organized at the American Chamber of Commerce in Korea during November 2002 to launch 'The New Edelman Korea.' The format of this video is almost like that of a wedding video, which is appropriate given that I met my future spouse at this event for the very first time.

» The development challenge of PR

Here in a recent interview with Jeff Ansell, I talk about PR's 'junior' role in the global financial crisis, the need for a more intelligent c-suite optimized consulting, and how changes in the modern media are shaping the future of marketing and communications.

» My introduction of Richard Edelman

Among my duties as the North Asia president of Edelman was the hosting of Richard Edelman on his annual visits to Tokyo and Seoul and this involved numerous public platform introductions, including this one to the American Chamber of Commerce in Japan during November of 2006. Our global CEO's visits were a key factor in the explosive 11-f...

» The New PR Standard video

When Edelman Korea exploded in size from 2002 and soon became the firm's largest operation in Asia-Pacific, its growth was accelerated through marketing, including this video which is a bit cheesy and was produced in a hurry, but it was very effective in accelerating perception momentum.
